How we structure discussing our differences matters. The
most common strategy in civics education is debate. While debate is
valuable, classrooms dialogues remove oppositional thinking and value
our differences.

Participants will examine the
differences between debates, discussions and dialogues. They will then
discuss the the relationships and interactions that are created by
each. Debates ask students confront others with a goal or changing
their beliefs in order to win. Participants will take part in a
dialogue model that focuses on understanding, finding nuance and
eliminating ambiguity. after the modeling experience. Participants
will have the opportunity to explore dialogue models and then apply
them to revise, rework and rebuild their classroom discussions of
challenging topics.
